Undergoing Fertility Treatment? Watch Your Plastics - Scientific American: "One of the most challenging aspects of Sarah Bly’s work is helping women cope with infertility.
“It’s not only a mental desire you have around creating a life, but a very deeply physical, primal and biological urge, and these women are dealing with this on all of those levels,” said Bly, a women's health counselor and fertility awareness educator in Oregon. Bly, who runs a private practice in Ashland, home of Oregon's famous Shakespeare festival, urges women to listen to their bodies in pursuing health and pregnancy. Increasingly, she's asking them to also pay attention to scientists’ alarms over chemical exposure.

“When I first started, I’d say ‘do a cleanse’,” Bly said. “Now I teach classes on how to avoid chemicals in our lives and homes.... Where have you lived? What foods did you eat?” For women trying fertility treatments, research indicates that exposure to one ubiquitous chemical, bisphenol-A, might greatly impair their chances of having a baby.

But federal agencies remain steadfast in the safety of the chemical, known as "BPA" and found in some canned foods and beverages, paper receipts and dental sealants. “That position is just untenable,” said Wade Welshons, an associate professor at the University of Missouri who studies estrogen chemicals. “One study after another shows BPA exposure leads to one adverse effect after another.”

FDA STAYS SILENT
Multiple studies have found that higher bisphenol-A levels in women undergoing fertility treatment—in vitro fertilization, or IVF—meant a reduction in successful pregnancies. The most recent study, published last month in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, examined 239 women who underwent IVF in Massachusetts from 2007 to 2012. Of the women with the highest exposure to BPA, 17 percent had a baby, compared to 54 percent of women with the lowest exposure.

BPA—used to make plastic hard and shatterproof—mimics the hormone estrogen and acts an endocrine disruptor. Properly functioning hormones are crucial to reproduction, as well as development, brain function and immune systems. The compound can leach out of can linings and into the food. Studies show that just about everyone has traces of the chemical in their body, and researchers believe diet is the major exposure route.

Welshons said virtually all reproductive impacts from BPA exposure shown in animal studies have been found in humans. The chemical has been shown to impact cell division in the ovaries, and alter menstrual cycles and the uterus. “We consider it an ovarian toxicant. In addition, strong evidence suggests that BPA is a uterine toxicant,” a group of 11 leading scientists wrote in a 2014 review of the chemical.

Despite this, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration maintains that the amount of BPA leaching from food packaging will not harm people. The agency declined several opportunities to comment about mounting evidence of BPA and IVF outcomes. Over the past few years, Environmental Health News has sent multiple requests to speak with FDA scientists about BPA research and been denied every time. Agency assessments declare that BPA is rapidly cleared from the body, leaving no time for health effects. “They need to stop pretending that there is no human BPA exposure," Welshons said.
"It’s widely found and in the urine of 90 percent of people,” he added. “We wouldn’t see all of these associations without exposure.”
Beware of these 6 common household items that cause cancer - NaturalNews.com: "

Most people probably live under the assumption that their place of dwelling is a safe haven from all the dangers that lurk "out there." But little do they know that many common household products contain deadly chemicals that are known to cause cancer, reproductive harm, birth defects and other health damage. Here's six of the most popular categories to avoid for the safety of you and your family:

1) Air fresheners. They're a staple in many American households, but conventional air fresheners are a hotbed of poisonous substances that could leave you and your loved ones infertile, brain-damaged or chronically ill. Tests conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) found that most air fresheners contain phthalates, which among other things interfere with male hormone production.

Most air fresheners are also loaded with other cancer-causing volatile organic compounds as well, which interfere with reproduction, respiration and cellular regeneration. A 2008 study conducted by Anne Steinemann at the University of Washington found that all air fresheners tested emitted chemicals known to be carcinogenic, meaning they cause cancer.

Instead of toxic commercial air fresheners, stick with all-natural essential oils, which can be applied to the skin or released into the air from a diffuser.

2) Candles. Similar to commercial air fresheners, many scented candles are also toxic. A study pioneered by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found that nearly half of all scented candles on the market contain lead wiring in their wicks, which is released into the air upon burning. This lead might make the wicks more stable, but it also leads to hormone disruption, behavioral disorders and various other health problems.

Many candles are also made of paraffin wax which, when burned, generates two highly toxic compounds, benzene and toluene, both of which are carcinogenic. Artificial fragrances and dyes are also present in many scented candles, which when burned end up in your lungs.

3) Art supplies. Cultural enrichment and creativity are both positive aspirations in life, but not when they involve many conventional art supplies. Many of the epoxy materials, glues, acrylic paints and solvents, drawing utensils and other supplies used to create art contain chemicals linked to allergies, organ damage and cancer.

The federal Labeling Hazardous Art Materials Act (LHAMA) requires that all art supplies sold in the U.S. bear warnings if they cause any acute hazards. But manufacturers are not required to provide an ingredients list, which is why it is recommended that users of such supplies purchase only products that are certified by the Art and Creative Materials Institute (ACMI).

ACMI-certified products undergo rigorous evaluations by independent toxicologists to make sure that they are safe for everyone, including small children.

4) Shampoos and conditioners. Toxins in cosmetics is a huge issue today, with many conventional consumer products -- including some labeled as "natural" or "organic" -- containing ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate that generate cancer-causing byproducts when used. Other carcinogenic additives commonly used in hair care products include polyethylene glycol (PEG) and cocamide DEA.

Safe Cosmetics has put together a list of the safest and most eco-friendly shampoos on the market, which are free of most or all of the chemicals listed in its "Skin Deep" database, which you can access here.

5) Antiperspirant deodorants. Millions of people use them daily to cover up foul body odor and reduce armpit perspiration. But antiperspirant deodorants are a no-go if you want to avoid chemicals like aluminum chlorohydrate, which can absorb directly into the skin and promote the formation of breast cancer. Aluminum from antiperspirants is also believed to contribute to brain diseases like Alzheimer's.

Other toxic additives in antiperspirant deodorants include parabens, a class of artificial preservatives that mimics estrogen in the body and promotes the growth of cancer cells. Parabens are also linked to gastrointestinal damage, nausea and central nervous system depression.

6) Shower curtains. They might help prevent water from spraying all over the floor, but your average plastic shower curtain acts something like a radiator for toxic chemical release. Many shower curtains, it turns out, off-gas harmful chemicals known as volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, that are known to damage the respiratory tract, central nervous system, liver and kidneys.

If your shower curtain has that unique "new shower curtain smell," it is likely releasing deadly chemicals -- potentially upwards of 108 different VOCs, in fact -- that are harming you and your children. For this reason, it is important to stick with only non-toxic, PVC-free shower curtains made without these harmful chemicals.
Zeranol (synthetic form of zearalenone) is also an estrogenic compound to which cattle and
swine in the United States’ meat industry are extensively exposed to because it
promotes rapid and more efficient growth rates in animals used as meat sources.
This carcinogen called zeranol is
used as a growth promoter for livestock in the United States, approved for use
in beef only in Canada, but not approved for use at all for any
livestock in the European Union-a testimony to its carcinogenicity.

Studies into zeranol have discovered that food products
which have been contaminated by this toxic

in young girls. This precocious puberty is a well known risk factor for breast cancer development. Also,
research studies on the effect of this carcinogen
on human health showed that serum from zeranol-treated cattle can stimulate
normal breast epithelial cells and convert them to breast tumor cells in vitro.
Another separate study showed that the toxic

an important role in breast cancer
development. It has also been proven that this toxic chemical/carcinogen stimulates the activity of a protein disulfide isomerase, an enzyme whose activity is often increased in cancer tissues.

As a carcinogen, this toxic chemical has been shown to enhance the proliferation of human breast cancer cells. It does this by using the same way that natural estrogen
(estradiol) uses to cause cancer. It is believed that the pathways that zeranol
uses to promote cancer formation is similar to those activated by the natural
estradiol. This was proven when young adult female mice, treated with zeranol,
led to the increased growth and branching of mammary glands, an action similar
to what is found in natural estrogen.

Furthermore, as a powerful estrogenic compound, zeranol has
demonstrated, by its ability to the growth and proliferation of human breast cancer in vitro, that it is as
potent in causing breast cancer just
like the natural hormone, estrogen, and another known carcinogen, Diethylstilbestrol or DES. In fact, a separate study showed a similarity between this toxic chemical (zeranol), the carcinogen (DES) and natural estrogen in the trios’ ability to transform MCF-10A human breast epithelial cells to breast cancer cells in vitro. The only difference between these three carcinogens and toxic chemicals is that, according to one study, normal breast
epithelial cells treated with zeranol, even at levels that were 30 xs lower
that the FDA established limit in beef, showed abnormal cancer cell growth.

Betel quid as a food is an Asian
edible condiment that has its main ingredient as betel leaf. Betel quid is made
up of betel leaf, areca nut (another carcinogen),
slaked lime, and may (or may not) contain tobacco. Betel quid is food to an astonishing over 600 million people worldwide, mostly from Asia, hence the
concern about its role as a toxic
material and carcinogen. Betel
quid as a food supplement or additive is important as an aphrodisiac,
antiseptic and breath freshener. According to another report, this toxic material and carcinogen is the fourth most popular psychoactive substance in the world after tobacco, alcohol and caffeine.

The WHO research group on cancer observed a higher percentage of
diagnosis of oral cancer in Asian
hospitals when compared to that of the western countries where betel quid is
virtually unknown. This discovery, coupled with other research findings led to
the conclusion that chewing this toxic material called betel quid goes beyond oral cancer. They noticed a significant increase also in cancer of the esophagus, liver,
pancreas, larynx, lung and other cancer.
A study in Papua New Guinea showed that oral squamous cell cancer is the most common malignant tumor in Papua New Guinea. This
oral cancer concentrates at the
corner of the mouth and the cheeks and has been attributed to betel quid
consumption. The study also showed that eating betel quid and smoking is
responsible for half of all cancer
deaths and reduces life span by 6 years.

Aluminum as a chemical element is the third most abundant
element after Oxygen and Silicon. It is also the abundant metal in the earth’s
crust with about 8% by weight of the earth’s solid surface. It can be found in
over 27 different minerals with bauxite being the chief ore. It is this
over-reactive nature of that has made it become a carcinogen. Almost every metal that is abundant in the environment
has some role in human health and nutrition, but there is nutritional about
Aluminum. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has named
Aluminum as a group 1 human carcinogen.

As a chemical compound in household products, Aluminum can
be found in cooking utensils, pots, pans and other non-corrosive metal products.
However, these above named household products have not been proven to cause
cancer. Certain toxic chemicals
which are salts of Aluminum have been found to be carcinogenic. These toxic
chemicals in the salts of Aluminum have been found in Antiperspirants and
Roll-ons. Research studies have shown that toxic
chemicals in Aluminum salts can reach up to 25% volume in some antiperspirants.
The use of antiperspirants can significantly increase the amount of Aluminum
salts absorbed into the body more than any other aluminum compound. Although
the deodorant industry have debunked the theory of the risk of developing
cancer due to the long exposure of aluminum salts, the truth is that the
industry is a big business having in mind that people always want to smell
fresh and not have sweat stains coming
through their clothes. The industry has a lot at stake if such statement is
true. Studies have shown that about 0.12% of these toxic chemicals in aluminum salts, present in deodorants and antiperspirantsare absorbed into the body after a single underarm application. A long term
exposure to this percentage, according to reports may increase the risk of breast cancer.

The presence of these toxic
chemicals in deodorants and antiperspirants poses a potentially dangerous
source of toxins that may accumulate if our lymph drainage system is damaged.
The effect of the long term exposure of these carcinogens and toxic
chemicals present in deodorants and antiperspirants remains unknown the
public, especially to women. Clinical studies have shown an irregularly high
incidence of breast cancer in the
upper outer quadrant of the breast, together with genomic instability in the
other quadrants of the breast. These findings support existing evidences of the
role of locally applied cosmetics in the development of breast cancer. Furthermore, it has been revealed these toxic chemicals in deodorants and antiperspirants
can accumulate in breast tissues. A report by the European Journal of Cancer Prevention states that “underarm shaving with antiperspirant/deodorant use may play a role in breast cancer.” The
chafing of skin caused by shaving hair seems to increase absorption of
aluminum.

These carcinogens,
Aluminum Chlorohydrate and Aluminum
Chloride, according to research, may cause cancer by interfering with the
functions of estrogen receptors in MCF7 human breast cancer cell lines. Estrogen plays a huge role in the
development of breast cancer (link
to Broccoli). The action of estrogen in causing breast cancer depends on the above named intracellular receptors
which function as ligand-activated zinc finger transcription factors. It is believed that these toxic chemicals of aluminum salts in deodorants and antiperspirants mimic the functions of estrogen in this process to cause cancer.

Furthermore, another research study shown that long term
exposure to these carcinogenic, toxic chemicals can cause malfunction
to other signaling pathways that may as well lead to breast cancer. The report summarized its findings by stating that
the long term exposure to these carcinogens
in deodorants and antiperspirants has shown a genotoxic profile that is capable of causing both DNA alterations and
genetic related effects that could be consistent with potential role in breast cancer.

Acetaldehyde, also known as ethanal is a colorless, mobile
liquid/gas with a pungent suffocating but pleasant fruity odor. It is a highly
soluble chemical. Acetaldehyde is ubiquitous in the ambient environment. It is
an intermediate product of higher plant respiration and coffee roasting,
tobacco burning, vehicle exhaust fumes and coal refining. The two highest
sources of acetaldehyde are residential fire places and wood stoves.
Acetaldehyde has been considered as a probable human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and a group 1 human carcinogen by the American Society for Cancer.

As a chemical found in household products, acetaldehyde is
used in the production of perfumes, polyester resin, and basic dyes.
Acetaldehyde is also used as a fruit and fish preservative, as a flavoring
agent and as a denaturant of alcohol.
It is also used in fuel compositions for hardening gelatin and as a solvent the
rubber, tanning and paper industries. Other household products in which
acetaldehyde is found include linoleum, wooden varnishes, plastics, water-based
and emulsion paints, tobacco smoke and alcohol.

Apparently, acetaldehyde becomes a toxic chemical when a person is exposed to any of its product over
a long period of time. Exposure may occur to individuals occupationally exposed
the toxicity of acetaldehyde either through its manufacture or use. As a toxic chemical, acetaldehyde can be a source of indoor pollution. This particular occurrence calls for concern since
we spend about 90% of our time (whether at work or at home) indoors. A research conducted in France showed that the concentration of acetaldehyde measured in
about 16 homes was approximately seven times higher than the concentration of
acetaldehyde found outdoors. The level of toxic acetaldehyde has been detected
in blood and breath.

As a carcinogen,
acetaldehyde is considered a group 1 human carcinogen by both the American Society for Cancer
and the US National Toxicology Program. Acetaldehyde becomes toxic chemical when it is produced from
ethanol in the body and from tobacco smoke. This toxic chemical/carcinogen
is the most abundant chemical in tobacco smoke and this toxic chemical in tobacco smoke dissolves easily in saliva before
it enters the blood stream. Acetaldehyde as a carcinogen is produced from ethanol, in alcoholic beverages and fermented foods, by microbes that have
little capacity to eliminate it which leads to accumulation of the toxic chemical in saliva during heavy
drinking and smoking.

Furthermore, as a carcinogen, this toxic chemical is known to cause cancers of the upper gastrointestinal tract and liver in alcohol drinkers who have been
exposed to high levels of the toxic

chronic smoking modifies the oral flora to produce more carcinogenic acetaldehyde
from ingested alcohol. The
production of this toxic chemical
can increase 6.5 fold during heavy drinking. Tobacco smoking can also

So how does talc
becomes a carcinogen in order to
cause ovarian cancer? Although it is not totally clear how this toxic material causes ovarian cancer but research work offers some
explanation.

1.<span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";"> It possible that the frequent use of talc on the genitals and failure to
clean it off allow the particles of this carcinogen
to enter the ovary via the vagina to cause cancer.
When these toxic materials enter the ovaries, they cause
irritation and low level inflammation of the ovaries. Scientists believe that the long-term, low level inflammation is what increases the risk of ovarian cancer. This true because particles of talc have been found in the lymph nodes and other tissues of women
with ovarian cancer.

2.<span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";"> Also, women who use this alleged carcinogen called talc have been shown to have low level of the antibody, Anti MUC 1,
than those who don’t use. Therefore, it is possible that talc reduces the level of this antibody. It is believed that this
antibody is linked with the prevention of cancer
formation in body cells.
